The Fisher F44 is a good fit for home prospectors who hunt yards, parks and relic permissions on dry land and want more control than a push-button starter detector offers. It weighs 2.3 lb, runs at 7.69 kHz, and gives you five modes, manual and automatic ground balance, a 1-99 numeric target ID and adjustable iron audio, all on two AA batteries. Its main limit is water: Fisher calls the control box weather-resistant, not submersible. Skip it if you want to wade, work wet salt sand or hunt the surf.

This review is desk research from Fisher’s published spec sheet and the First Texas Products store, checked on October 3, 2026. Nobody at Backyard Prospectors has used this detector.

What it does well

Ground balance in a light detector. The F44 offers manual ground balance and an automatic Ground Grab, plus a mineralization readout. That helps on iron-rich soil around old homesites, where a fixed-balance detector can chatter.

A useful iron toolkit. FeTone lets you hear iron at a separate, adjustable volume instead of silencing it, so you know when a good signal sits next to a nail. Five modes, notch discrimination and a programmable Custom mode let you tighten up as you learn a site.

A detailed ID. The 1 to 99 numeric ID and 4-tone audio give more information than a 3-tone starter. V.C.O. audio in pinpoint mode helps center the target before you dig.

Light and cheap to run. At 2.3 lb on two AA batteries rated for 25 to 30 hours, it is easy to carry for a long session and inexpensive to power.

Where it falls short

  • Not waterproof. The control box resists rain and dust. It is not submersible and has no IP rating. Wading, creeks and the surf line are out.
  • Single frequency. At 7.69 kHz it is a general-purpose land detector. It is not built for wet salt sand or tiny gold.
  • More to learn than a starter. Ground balance, FeTone, notch and Custom mode reward practice. If you want to switch on and go, a simpler detector will feel easier.
  • Check the coil and warranty in the listing. Fisher sells a stock-coil F44 and an F44-11DD. Fisher’s spec sheet lists a 2-year warranty, so confirm what the seller offers before you buy.

Who should buy it

Buy it if: you plan to hunt the same yards, parks and old homesites repeatedly, and you want ground balance and iron audio without paying for waterproofing you will not use.

Skip it if: water is part of the plan, you want the simplest possible first detector, or you want a dedicated gold machine.
